Don't Do a Gap Year, Do a Growth Year

According to the American Council on Education, 20% of students are considering cancelling their education plans and taking a Gap Year. Another study showed that 16% of high school seniors plan to take a Gap Year in the 2020 Fall Semester.

The Gap Year Association defines a Gap Year as, "a semester or year of experiential learning, typically taken after high school and prior to career or post-secondary education, in order to deepen one's practical, professional, and personal awareness." The problem with Gap Year, according to my friend Pam Schoessling, is that a Gap means something is “missing.”  Instead of taking off to fill what is missing, why not consider a "Growth Year," where you are adding personal, practical, and professional experiences to your life.

Instead of students seeking outside help, why couldn’t your institution help create the Growth Year on campus as part of their first-year experience? Campus have the resources to provide a comprehensive Growth Year experience, so why not find a way to utilize those resources?

In this one-hour webinar, participants will engage in activities that help students create a Growth Year plan - in their first semester of college. By the end of the session, they will define how to serve the world, identify a specific problem to solve and why it matters, and leave with the tools to create an academic and career Growth Year plan.

We will be providing three sessions, targeting three different populations: (1) Advisors/Coaches in Higher Education; (2) Students, both high school seniors and college students; and (3) Parents of students interested in helping their son and/or daughter construct a Growth Year Plan.
